Alexandria Township is a township in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township’s population was 4,938, reflecting an increase of 240 (+5.1%) from the 4,698 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 1,104 (+30.7%) from the 3,594 counted in the 1990 Census.
Alexandria was formed by Royal charter on March 5, 1765, from portions of Bethlehem Township, and was incorporated as one of New Jersey’s initial 104 townships by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 21, 1798. Portions of the township were taken to form Frenchtown (April 4, 1867), Holland Township (April 13, 1874, restored to Alexandria on March 4, 1878, and recreated on March 11, 1879) and Milford (April 15, 1911). The township was named for James Alexander, a surveyor who served as New Jersey Attorney General and who had acquired 10,000 acres (4,000 ha) of land in the area in 1744.
A fire alarm system can provide early warning of a fire situation. People should never ignore an alarm. During the fire, sensitive detection devices might have detected a fire condition on a different floor. Even if smoke does not appear in the building, it is important to assume that a fire is present. When in a building with an alarm system, never use elevators. Always take the stairs instead. Fire alarms can be a dangerous nuisance, so don’t ignore them!
A fire alarm system should be fast and reliable. The faster it detects fire, the lower the damage to the building. Moreover, false alarms can disrupt business and generate additional expenses due to unnecessary evacuations. Lastly, false alarms can make people deaf to the fire alarms, thus increasing the chances that they will disregard the warnings in the future. Fire alarm systems should be flexible to adapt to changes in technology and environment. Proper planning and maintenance of the fire alarm system can take a considerable amount of time.
To prevent a fire, the fire alarm system should meet certain standards set by the building’s occupancy group. The Alexandria Township Building Code 2014 and the electrical code 2011 define the type of occupancy groups and requirements for fire alarm systems. Additionally, NFPA 72, 2010 Edition, provides guidance for the design of fire alarm systems in Alexandria Township. To make sure that your fire alarm system is installed correctly, check with Alexandria Township’s Department of Buildings bulletins for design standards.
The fire alarm control panel is the central monitoring and user interface element of the system. Its touch pad allows onsite personnel to program, troubleshoot, reset, and silence the system. The panel monitors the fire alarm initiating devices and has a supervisory function over all wiring connected to it. When an alarm occurs, the panel sends a signal to the monitoring agency to alert emergency personnel. You should be aware of this, and be prepared.
Addressable fire alarm systems are more advanced than conventional ones. Each alarm component has its own unique address, so if there is a problem, the front desk staff can respond more effectively. An addressable system also reduces the time it takes to locate the trouble signal. The addressable system is preferred by most property owners and managers. An addressable fire alarm system eliminates the need to trace trouble signal origins. Several fire alarm control panels are addressable, and they can monitor single or multiple buildings.
There are two categories of fire alarm systems: L3 and L2. The L3 system has automatic detectors in all areas of the building, including the escape routes. Its L4 and L5 systems feature additional detectors in high risk areas. The latter is best for medium-sized buildings. When choosing a system, remember to determine which category is right for your premises. You’ll want a system that offers you a broad range of protection.
A backup power source for the fire alarm system is essential for proper operation. In case of emergency power failure, the backup power supply must be a battery back-up system. Typically, these backup systems are a separate battery box or a dedicated branch circuit. The battery back-up system is designed to operate the fire alarm system for 24 hours and 15 minutes in full evacuation mode. A battery backup system should contain signal selection, bypass, and password protected switches. Each building will have its own requirements, but additional modules can be added to the system as needed.
Ionization fire alarms are the most commonly used detectors to detect flaming fires. They contain a small amount of radioactive material which is inserted between two charged plates. When smoke particles hit the ionized air, the particles interrupt the flow of ions, activating the alarm. Moreover, ionization fire alarms can detect fast flaming fires. They also have a built-in radioactive material.
A fire alarm system can save lives. If you don’t have a fire alarm, you and your family could be trapped in a building and could not escape in time. Even if the fire is small, a fire alarm can alert occupants quickly, giving them extra time to get out of the building and put out the flames. In such a situation, the time that is spent getting out of the building will be vital.
